RISE: Resilience In Schools and Education

** RISE has now moved and is available as a whole school programme. Click here to find out more **

Now, perhaps more than ever, we want to build children’s resilience. We see the impact that poor resilience has on children and classrooms on a daily basis:

  • Children who give up and lose motivation after making the slightest mistake,

  • Peers who don’t have the negotiation and compromise skills to get on and solve social problems,

  • Pupils who consistently disrupt learning to take the focus away from their lack of confidence,

  • Students who resort to aggression because they do not have the emotional literacy to cope with adversity.

These children cause us the greatest concern and can make learning for themselves and others very difficult. The fact is however that, in many cases, it doesn’t have to be like this…

The COVID-19 pandemic has tested children’s resilience as it has added to the stress on children and families and taken away many of their resilience factors. While a lot of children are currently experiencing a ‘honeymoon period’ of return with the excitement to see their friends and having the structure and stability of school once again, we know the impact that COVID-19 lockdowns has had on children’s mental health and wellbeing. Now then is perhaps the best time to be focusing on children’s resilience to prevent future difficulties from arising, and increase children’s capacity to feel settled and learn in schools.

RISE Webinar Handout

RISE: Helping children to find strength and ‘bounce forwards’.

The RISE programme provides a comprehensive and flexible framework that teachers can use to build up children's resilience in their classroom, and help them to feel more emotionally secure and stable. It is intensive as we cover eight areas which we know are important for resiliency (Competence, Contribution, Confidence, Connectedness, Character, Coping, Control, Enjoyment), and include a range of practical strategies for each. The RISE programme is now live on ‘EdPsychEd’. You can see a sample from the introduction below:

Thank you for the excellent training on Resiliency that you delivered to all our Teachers and Teaching Assistants. It was very well received by all staff. The information was delivered in a clear and structured way and you provided lots of practical activities and strategies for each of the 7Cs+E. We will definitely be putting these into practice. We have recommended you to others and will certainly be booking your other training too!
— Mrs S Robinson, Headteacher
Clear ,concise information, delivered in a friendly way. Lots of examples given and strategies to follow. I would highly recommend.

Growth Mindset:

Supporting children to maximise effort, re-frame mistakes and become resilient learners.

A lot of children aren’t able to achieve their potential because they are afraid of making mistakes and often value being able to do things quickly and easily rather than their effort. This training gives a practical framework for teachers to implement Growth Mindset to develop children’s confidence and effort with learning, and build their academic resiliency.

All pre-bookable dates are now filled. Contact us to arrange a suitable date / time for your school.

New Growth Mindset course due to be launched on EdPsychEd this year.
